January 2019

This unusual looking item is an antique needle holder for a store display. Customers would select the needle they wanted to buy by spinning the dial and then taking out the size of needle they needed.

January's meeting was filled with antique sewing machines and accessories to look at brought by member Leanna.

She had everything from a hand pinker that works, hemming devices, old buttonholers and a third hand or  sewing bird, used when hand piecing. She told us that early zig zaggers actually moved the fabric from side to side to accomplish the zig zag stitch!

She brought part of her large collection of items ranging from toy sewing machines to adult machines,

Most of the toy machines do chain stitch or lock stitch

She has an early serger that is missing a faceplate that she might be able to replace using 3D printing technology.

This is the Elna "Grasshopper"

This machine even came with a model to sew clothes for

First off, Virginia showed the opportunity quilt that will be raffled off on National Quilt Day in March. She also handed out flyers so we can get this day on our schedules.  For those of you who have gone in the past, you know it is a lot of fun!

Jill explained the Block of the Month(BOM) for this year

She will be giving us two sizes to choose from.

Leanna then started the presentation and told us how she began her collection and many interesting facts and history about the items. It is one of her passions. She loves to "rescue" old machines. She is very knowledgeable and both buys, sells and repairs the machines.

I'm not sure if it was this particular machine but one of her antiques was in a quilting video- she calls it her "star"

This aqua case to hold machine accessories is from around the 50's or 60's

In addition to this store display she also showed us old seam rippers and needle threaders and a rare early walking foot called "the penguin". Many thanks to Leanna for hauling all these things for us to see and for explaining the history behind them.

Dianne got a great bargain on this quilt top she found at Saver's

The embroidery on this quilt by Dianne is enhanced by coloring with crayons.

Members requested Dianne teach us this technique

Mystic Blue Kit Block of the Month

Sandra had a "tell".  She and her husband traveled on Amtrack to the Milwaukee/Oshkosh area where they had a big family reunion.  They loved traveling by train.

Dianne's sister Sandi made all of these hand embroidered flower blocks for Dianne on her 60th birthday.

Peggys marvelous scrap quilt that she will be donating to charity.

Leanna and Tracy showed us these bed runners that will be opportunity offerings at I believe they said Quiltfest
